BALDWYN, Miss. (AP) - About 200 spectators and Civil War re-enactors gathered in northern Mississippi this weekend to mark the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Brice's Crossroads.
Confederate forces led by Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated a much larger Union force on June 10, 1864.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the gathering this year was smaller than it was for the 145th anniversary in 2009.
Jim Bishop of Baldwyn is sergeant major for cavalry division for the Third Tennessee Cavalry of Cleburne's Division of Re-enactors, which hosted Saturday's living history event. He said Brice's Crossroads is sacred ground.
