Ask Andy: Cell phone deals

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - What do you do to keep your cell phone bill from breaking your budget?

Some said they try to talk at night when it is free.  Others said they mostly use text messaging.
Apparently, you can cut costs whether you are looking for a contract or sticking with your current plan.  Here are some examples how:

Pay for what you use - Evaluate your bill each month to see what minutes you pay for and what minutes you actually use.  You may save with a plan that includes fewer minutes.

Get a data plan - E-mailing and web surfing can eat up your bill if you have to pay per megabyte.

Read the fine print - Remember, you have 30 days to cancel your plan to avoid a termination fee.

Pay as you go - If you do not use your cell phone often, prepaid plans may make more sense to you.

Complain if necessary - Do not be afraid to complain before forking over the cash for a huge bill.  You may be able to get a credit or even get charges removed.

Consider senior plans - If you are 65 or older, ask if the cell phone company offers options at a discount.

Shop around - Sift through the major plans considering your cell phone usage and needs.  If you do not have the time, you can check out websites like or to do the comparing for you.

No matter which rout you take, make sure you get a contract that meets your needs and that you are not overspending on unused options.
