MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A small used car dealership in Memphis is suffering from a case of identity theft.
America Auto Sales is a tiny used car sales lot in the 3200 block of Millbranch. According to Manager Micah Guidry the business has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 1997.
Last week, for no apparent reason, phone calls began to flood into the dealership.
"I'd say we received well over a thousand calls," Guidry said.
The calls, he said, came from all over, including places as far away as California and Ohio. Several people even showed up at the lot, bringing receipts for cars they thought they had purchased.
They were all victims of a scam.
A website, located at AmericAutoSales.com, is offering repossessed automobiles at a fraction of market value. The website, taking payment through online wire transfers, is listing America Auto Sales' in Memphis as its physical address.
According to Randy Hutchinson of the Better Business Bureau, the website is a scam.
"It's a case of business identity theft," he said.
Hutchinson warns consumers that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
"If you're asked to wire money to a company that you found on the internet to buy something that is well below market price...beware," he said.
The only way to contact the website's creator is through an online form. Action New 5's emails Monday went unanswered.
Meanwhile, according to Guidry, it appears many people have been taken for a ride.
"It's a sad, sad thing when people call you and they've lost thousands of dollars and there's nothing you can do," he said. "It's a terrible thing."
America Auto Sales website is located at www.memphisautoworld.com, and the company does not sell cars over the internet.
