MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A disagreement between co-workers escalated into a shooting inside a business along Lamar Avenue late Tuesday morning.
The two men involved in the shooting normally weld commercial air conditioners at Cambridgeport Air Systems. But their exchange just before lunch Tuesday was anything but cool.
"The heat gets to everybody, but nobody ever expected that," employee Billy Spencer said.
Spencer says a welder and his supervisor were arguing near the bathroom when everyone heard three gunshots.
"Everything's loud in that metal shop, so we heard something that sounded like pallets dropping," he said. "But then when everybody started hollering and running toward the door, we knew something was wrong."
Spencer said chaos followed.
"Everybody got to running," he said. "Insulators went plum out the door. There was a guy here delivering metal and he went to shaking and saying, 'Please somebody sign this so I can leave.'"
Spencer said the welder shot the supervisor, but he did not know what they were fighting about.
"By the time we made it up front, we saw the guy was bleeding down his arm and the other guy, they had him running him out the door," Spencer said. "They got him to the parking lot and took the gun away from him."
Spencer said about 25 people work at Cambridgeport, which was full of workers when the shots rang out.
The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault. The victim suffered non-critical injuries.
Police haven't released any names.
