Air conditioning units help those without keep cool

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Residents who have been without air conditioning breathed a sigh of relief Friday after Shelby County stepped in to keep them cooler all summer.

The heat inside Cassandra Johnson's home has been tremendous.

"It's been like an oven," Johnson said.  "One of the good things about this house is the windows are the crank out kind, so I can let the windows out and they do let air in and out, but on humid nights that doesn't even do any good."

Johnson can now keep cool thanks to her new air conditioning unit courtesy of Shelby County.

One hundred and fifteen air conditioning units are being delivered to residents like Johnson who qualified through the Shelby County Community Services Agency.  Applicants must meet federal poverty guidelines and not have a working air conditioning unit in the home to get one.

Interim Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford personally delivered some of the units.

"I'm here today giving air to Ms. Cassandra," Ford said.  "It's a good feeling in your heart."

The air conditioners were loaded onto trucks at the Shelby County Support Services Warehouse Friday then delivered and installed in residents' homes throughout the county.

"It's a big relief," Johnson said.  "It's like I told my mom, just a little bit of help is enough.
