New kiosks streamline license renewal process

OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - Lines at driver's licence renewal stations in DeSoto County may soon be shorter and faster, thanks to new self-serve kiosks that will soon be installed.

Officials promise the kiosks will streamline the license renewal process, hopefully saving drivers time.

"You can replace your license as well as renew your license," examiner Linda McKinzie said Monday. "You can replace an ID card or renew an ID card."

One such kiosk was installed last December in Olive Branch.  Since then, Mississippi officials have ordered 25 more to be distributed across the state.  Once complete, a new ad campaign will tell residents they can "Renew in 2," which is better than what is often the alternative.

"(Renewal often takes) thirty minutes to an hour, or longer sometimes," McKinzie said.

In terms of the cost, drivers can expect to pay $25.50 to renew a license, and $10.50 to replace it.  You can use a credit or debit card, and when you're finished, the kiosk will even take your new photo.

The kiosks can be used by anyone from the ages of 16 to 75.  Officials compare them to automated checkouts found at most grocery stories in simplicity of use.
