MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A four-year-old child died early Friday morning in what Memphis police are calling an accidental drowning.
Officials tell Action News 5 that police and rescue crews were called to a home in the 7200 block of Country Oaks Drive just after 1:00 a.m.
There, a group of children were spending the night, and went out for a swim in a backyard pool. When the group returned, they realized one of the children was missing.
"We found that some children had gone swimming and they missed one child," said Major Charles Newell of the Memphis Police Department. "The father went back out and found him at the bottom of the pool."
The child was rushed Germantown Methodist Le Bonheur, but did not survive.
"I'm sorry to hear about the family, and hope they're doing good with their loss," neighbor Darian Willis said.
No one answered the door at the house Friday morning. Willis said the people who live at the home just moved to the area.
"They just moved here a couple of months ago," he said. "I came home and saw police and fire. I don't know what's going on except what I heard."
The identity of the drowning victim has not been released. According to Willis, children can often be seen coming and going from the house.
"A lot of kids, different kids, I don't know if its like a daycare or what," he said.
Memphis police confirmed the child that drowned was visiting the house, and did not live there.
Police are still investigating the downing. No charges have been filed in the case.
