MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South security guard was recovering Sunday after a shootout at the apartment complex he was patrolling.

The 23-year-old security guard was recovering at The MED while suspect who shot him was still on the run.

The shootout happened at the Harmony Woods Apartments near Jackson and Macon.

Police were investigating a call about drug activity at the apartments at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators said after police cleared the scene, one person came out of hiding and started firing shots at two security guards.  One guard was hit and taken to The MED in critical condition.  He has since improved to non-critical condition.

The other guard started shooting back, but the suspect got away.

Alorin Polk heard the gunshots being fired.

"You heard the screaming and the yelling, police everywhere," said Polk.  "Everyone's concern was did anyone survive and is everyone OK."

The shootout happened near a playground on the apartment complex.  Residents said many children live in the apartments.

"It's sad to see because someone could have lost their life over something stupid," Polk said.

Don Settles also heard the gunshots near the apartment complex's playground.

"I was worried about the kids that was out there," Settles said.

Police searched for the suspect from a helicopter and with K9 units, but were unable to find him.

Police asked if you know anything that could help catch the shooter, call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
