Action News 5 anchor vies to host her own show on Oprah's new network

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Kontji Anthony's three-minute video now showing on Oprah Winfrey's Host Your OWN Show Contest website is a departure from her day job as a news reporter.

Anthony says Memphis' spirit of giving inspired her to submit her show idea Pick-Me-Up! to Oprah's contest.

The idea came after Action News 5 viewers helped a mom and her baby in a story Anthony reported back in 2006.

"When I saw how we stepped into this person's life and turned her life turned around on a dime, I knew that there was a way to do that on a continuing basis.  So that's what Pick-Me-Up! is all about," Anthony explained.

The show would offer a day of transformation to someone in need of a pick-me-up. Companies and people would assist in the pick-me-up, which might involve anything from sending a cleaning service into a person's home to giving a mom a minivan.

Anthony joins thousands of other contestants who are competing for web votes to win a chance at hosting their own show.

Mark Burnett, the producer for NBC's Apprentice is the producer behind Oprah's show.

"Whether I win this or not, I hope it plants a seed that will encourage this kind of programming to make it to our airwaves," she said. "We all need a pick-me-up sometimes."
