MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police investigated a bizarre murder Thursday, where a man was found dead in his car in a church parking lot.
Franklin Borum was startled by the strange noise outside his Ely Street home early Thursday morning.
"At first we thought it was fireworks until they got closer and they were real loud," he said.
According to police, a car crashed into this fence in the back parking lot of the Southside Church of Christ.
"I heard a car screeching in the street, so I Iooked out the window, and that's when I seen the car go through the fence," he said.
When authorities arrived, they found the man who had been shot still inside the car.
"You could tell he was slumped over because you really couldn't see his head over the seat," Borum said.
According to investigators, the man was driving when he was shot in the head, lost control of the car, and crashed through a gate into the church's parking lot.
"I didn't know he was dead until police told us this morning when we came outside," Borum said.
Church members would not comment on camera, but said they in the process of trying to make repairs. Borum, meanwhile, said crime is becoming too rampant in his community. He is ready for the senseless violence to stop.
"I don't know why he was shot," he said. "This is South Memphis. A lot of crazy stuff happens here. Just got to take the good with the bad, I guess."
