Congratulations to our city leaders who landed the big one: Bass Pro Shops has finally agreed to go forward with their plan to turn the Pyramid into a really big retail center.
The project has the potential to invigorate the Pinch district adjacent to the Pyramid and to draw more tourists to the region. That's the good news. What's not so good is that our leaders seem to have a serious case of attention deficit disorder when it comes to our tourism development projects.
We do have a number of terrific assets, but they are scattered here and there as are our development dollars. We've started on a public investment at Beale St. Landing, but don't have enough money to finish it. We've started something at the Fairgrounds, but the plan and funding are incomplete. One of the city's biggest attractions, Graceland, is threatened by neglect.
The challenge for our city leaders is one of focus. We can't do it all. We need a comprehensive plan that narrows the focus to produce the lasting results that we'll all be proud of.
