New US citizens sworn in over Independence Day weekend

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - This will be the First Independence Day for several people sworn in as new US citizens in Memphis this week.

A large crowd pledged their allegiance to the United States at the Memphis Citizen and Immigration Office Friday.

Candidates immigrated from Canada, Yemin, Israel and Mexico to name only a few.

New US citizen Juan Daniel Perez said his journey has been long.

"It actually means a lot to me to ... be a citizen here in the states," Perez said.  "Just a long journey."

New citizens watched a videotaped message from their new president.  Barack Obama encouraged them to use their freedoms and their talents to contribute to the good of the nation and the world.
