MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An attempted robbery suspect pulled out his gun, killing one of his teenage suspects in the process.

Police said the two 16-year-old suspects confronted a 21-year-old Bartlett man at the Edgewater Apartments near Sycamore View and Raleigh LaGrange around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said during the robbery, one of the teenagers fired a shot at the man they were robbing.  The victim, who works for a local gun range, fired back and killed one of the suspects.  The other was wounded.

Gregory Arnold, a guest at the apartment complex, said the victim first played along.

"He said, OK, I'm going to give you my money," Arnold said.  "They thought he was getting his wallet, and he was getting his gun."

Police said the victim of the attempted robbery was three feet away from one robber and about 10 feet from the other.  He fired five shots, four of them striking the suspects.

"That's when he proceeded to shoot these people," Arnold said.  "He was just protecting his family."

Anna Middleton also lives in the complex and was burglarized two weeks ago around the same time at night.

"The first thing that went through my head was I wonder if it was the same people who broke in here," Middleton said.

Police said they are investigating if the suspects are linked to other robberies.

"There were footprints all over our door that were smaller shoe prints, like the size of teenagers," Middleton said.  "We figured it was kids who did it because of what they took from the house."

Arnold said he hopes the suspect who survived will rethink his life.

"I think it's going to change his life, I really do," Arnold said.  "He's going to hopefully teach others."

Authorities said the victim's actions appear justified.  The robbery is still under investigation and charges are pending.  They have not released the names of the suspects.
