MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 13-year-old Memphis boy is recovering at The MED after being shot in the back.

Gunshots rang out in the 3200 block of Dothan around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, startling neighbors.

"It scared me," neighbor Gertha Jones said. "I'm very scared."

According to investigators, the 13-year-old teen was walking down the street with his 16-year-old brother when a man came up to them with a gun.

"They were walking across the drainage ditch behind me when a subject approached them attempting to rob them, and shot one of the juveniles," said Tracey Gossett of the Memphis Police Department.

The 13-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in non-critical condition.

"They were prepping him in the back, putting on bandages, and I think they put a brace around his neck, too," Jones said.

The teen's father arrived on the scene very distraught, questioning police about what happened to his son.  Authorities spent the day sifting through clues, gathering evidence, and talking to witnesses.

Some neighbors said the crime is something they never expected.

"It's kinda shocking for it to be happening today, especially with school being out," Jones said.

There have been no arrests in the case.  If you have information that can help authorities, call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
