MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Maizah Wilridge of Whitehaven came to tears Wednesday as she thought about the violent death of her family's two year-old Pit Bull Terrier named Rock.
"He died protecting his home," she said.
Memphis Police say Rock was shot three times Tuesday afternoon during a burglary at the Wilridge home where a "Beware of Dog" sign is posted.
Wilridge showed Action News 5 one of the bullet holes in the wall and where Rock and the suspect appeared to have scuffled before the dog was shot two more times.
"I've never lost a child before, but just felt like to me that I lost a child," she said.
Thanks to an observant neighbor, Memphis Police arrested 18 year-old Cameo Covington shortly after the crime inside a house just one block away.
Police say Covington got into the Wilridge home by pushing in an air conditioning unit then climbing through the window. He was seen going back and forth over a backyard fence..
"He was determined to come in here and kill whatever he needed to 'cause he had a gun and he was ready to shoot," said Wilridge.
Police say Covington ransacked the house as Rock lay dying on the living room floor.
"The money, the jewelry, can be replaced, but my dog cannot," Wilridge said.
Police say Cameo Covington confessed to the crime. He's being held on a $50,000 bond.
