Count me among many people who thought that if A C Wharton was going to be successful in his new position as Memphis Mayor, his first order of business was going to have be draining the swamp. Unfortunately, eight months into the job, that is still a work in progress.
An audit of the city's Division of General Services has verified what many of us suspected. The stuff going on in the Fleet Services group was so outrageous that it would be funny, if it wasn't our tax dollars that were being passed around. Remember the multi-million dollar expenditures for the flat tires? One city employee now says that the guy who owned the tire company was actually the city official who was awarding the contract.
We need our governments to provide us with important basic services. Every time public servants game the system like this, it deepens the level of distrust that many people already have for government in general.
And by the way, most of us had to work hard to come by the money we pay in taxes. This is galling, to say the least.
