MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police in Millington are turning to technology for help attacking traffic issues.
"We have a traffic problem in the City of Millington," said Millington Police Chief Ray Douglas.
A camera and a computer are wired to a small SUV parked in any one of 172 predetermined spots. The camera will snap a picture of speeder's tags and send them a $50 ticket in the mail.
"We're not going to be unreasonable about this," Douglas said. "We're going to give everybody 10 miles over the speed trap, and I hate to say that because that's a violation of the law, but we're not trying to be a speed trap."
Douglas asked drivers to slow down and be careful.
There will be a grace period for the first 30 days where speeders will receive warnings in the mail.
Wednesday, the camera caught 297 speeders in about five hours of work.
