Tomato lovers descend upon Ripley for annual festival

RIPLEY, TN (WMC-TV) - If you love tomatoes, Ripley is the place to be this weekend, as residents celebrate the 27th Annual Lauderdale County Tomato Festival.

The theme of this year's festival is Eat Ripley Tomatoes - something many people there plan to do.

"Our tomato farmers tell us its because of the soil. We're located on the Mississippi River," said Susan Todd of the Lauderdale County Chamber of Commerce.

Farmer Robert Tims should know.  He was just named Lauderdale County Tomato Farmer of the Year.

"Certain soils have a lot more nutrition, and it also has a lot to do with the weather," he said.

For Ginger Moore and her husband, there's nothing like taking a bite out of a Ripley tomato.

"I've always wanted to come here," Moore said. "We love Ripley tomatoes. We can get them in Memphis, but we thought we'd like to come out and get a feel for the whole Ripley tomato thing."

Moore bought a bushel of the fine Ripley fruit to take home.

"In my car I have a small salt shaker and lots of wet wipes and everything, because on my way home I plan to eat half of what we buy," she said

Adults and kids alike can find just about everything at this year's tomato festival, from good food to of course, delicious tomatoes.

"Eat Ripley tomatoes," Todd said. "They're the best in the state, and probably the whole world."
