The Memphis Grizzlies opened NBA Summer League Play in Las Vegas with a tight win over the Atlanta Hawks 89-to-85.
The Grizz, made up mostly of second year players, blew out to a Big 15 point Lead in the second quarter and coasted the rest of the way.. Almost too much in the 4th quarter as the Hawks, led by Rookie Jordan Crawford of Xavier and Wake Forests' Jeff Teague, battled back to cut the lead to 2 with about a minute left.
But, the young Grizzlies kept their composure and closed the game out at the Thomas and Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.
Grizz Guard O.J. Mayo opened his 2-game Point Guard experiment in the Summer League by leading all scorers with 20-points.
He also had 3 assists, but turned the ball over 8-times.
The Grizzlies had 21-turnovers total to Atlanta's 19.
Memphis shot the ball well, hitting better than 51%. They also outrebounded the Hawks 37-to-27.
Sam Young Had 19 for the Grizz. Darrell Arthur next with 17-points and 7-Rebounds.
Hasheem Thabeet provided 11-points, 8-Rebounds and 2 Blocked shots.
DeMarre Carroll in the Hustle Category with 12-points, 8-rebounds, 3-steals and 3-assists.
Rookie Greivis Vasquez comes through with just 2-points, but 4 Rebounds, 3-assists and 2-steals in just over 17-minutes.
The Grizzlies play the Milwuakee Bucks Tuesday night in Game Two at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
