FAYETTE COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - The Director of Fayette County's Chamber of Commerce says the chamber is being taken advantage of by a company calling in its name.

Director Julie Perrine is unhappy that a Texas-based company is calling on behalf of the Fayette County chamber.

"For anybody else to be calling is not legitimate, and they're not affiliated with the Fayette County Chamber," she said. "We have not endorsed anybody."

The Fayette County chamber is now selling ads for a 2011 county map.  But Perrine says Universal Adcom is also calling chamber members.  According to Perrine, the company is claiming it is with the chamber, and is trying to sell maps and magnets.

"She kept stressing that it was a one day special and had to be completed by the close of the day," said Rossville business owner Sharon Puryear.

Puryear knew something was wrong after she was quoted a price.

"I thought it was too steep, and the more she talked she lowered the price of the ad," she said.

The Better Business Bureau gives Universal Adcom an "F" rating.  They've had 326 complaints in last 36 months and 138 complaints in past year.

Complaints revolve around their selling practices and credit and billing disputes.

"Be leery of all phone calls and get specific information and always get a name and phone number," Puryear said.  "When they purchase an ad from this company, they're making money for this company. This company is not doing anything for them."

Action News 5's calls to Universal Adcom were not returned.
