MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The intense heat has been unbearable for a mother of eight stuck in her apartment with no electricity.
Demetrice Robertson and three of her eight children have been living in their apartment without electricity for about a month.
"I keep my windows open and my doors open to stay cool," Robertson said. "Living without a stove and a refrigerator and nothing to eat is hard."
Robertson said after she moved from Arizona to Memphis, her purse was stolen. MLGW will not turn her power on because she has no identification.
"Trying to get some money to get my ID so I can get my utilities on," Robertson said.
MLGW said the power lines running to Robertson's apartment had to be cut and the meter had to be removed because a previous tenant tried to steal electricity.
"They shouldn't be stealing utilities," Robertson said. "Learn how to pay your bills on time."
MLGW said Robertson will have to show proof of residency and at least one form of identification before her power can be turned on.
"I'm hurt," she said. "I'm angry because it's hot and I have to sit outside all the time."
Robertson hoped someone would hear her cry for help.
"I need help," Robertson said. "Anybody that's able to help me and my family get out of this situation."
MLGW officials said they were in the process of contacting Robertson to see what type of assistance they can offer.
