Community helps family of 9 without electricity

The community continues to rally around a local family after learning they have been living without electricity.

Demetric Robertson said she and her family are appreciative of all the support they have received. Thanks to the generosity of others, she can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"It's getting a little easier," Robertson said. "I'm not worrying anymore because God's got control of everything.  Everything is in His hands."

People from all across the Mid-South have stepped in to help the single mother of eight whose home has been stuck with no air or electricity.

Oak Grove Baptist Church has volunteered to collect donations on behalf of Robertson and her family. They have also offered Robertson a hotel room until she can find a permanent place to stay.

"Being in the hotel room...air...we get to watch tv, watch the news," she said.

City Councilwoman Wanda Halbert is also trying to help Robertson and her family find housing. Robertson cannot get power at her apartment because someone tried to steal electricity.

She also had her ID stolen and is unable to get her power back on until she can show proper identification and a copy of her lease.

"Some more people are supposed to come and help me get my ID," Robertson said.

Despite all she has been through, Robertson said she now has hope and is looking forward to a bright future.

"Kids go to school.  Me get a job, probably go back to school for being a chef and find a restaurant that will take me in to give me a job so I can get on my feet."

If you want to directly help Ms. Robertson and her family, please e-mail our newsroom at or contact Oak Grove Baptist Church at (901) 775-0878.
