MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The mother of a man who died of heat-related causes recalled how her son was helping a neighbor when he died.

Hazel Oliver watched as emergency crews tried to revive her son, 56-year-old Johnny Bobbitt.

"The paramedics did everything they could to save him," Oliver said, "but they couldn't."

Bobbitt was found seated in a chair in the carport of his neighbor's home Saturday.  Earlier in the day, he had been working in his neighbor's yard in extreme heat.

"I went back to the window to look at him," Oliver said.  "He was sitting in the chair with his head all the way back.  He was so still, I suspected something then."

Oliver said her son enjoyed helping others.

"He didn't work, he was disabled," Oliver said.  "He didn't have a special job, so his job was doing things for the neighbors."

Oliver said her son also loved life and sports.

"Big on sports, especially the Arkansas Razorbacks," Oliver said.

Bobbitt lived with his mother and was always seen by her side.  Oliver said he meant the world to her and will be greatly missed.

"He did everything for me," Oliver said.  "Took me to the doctor.  It's going to be really hard without him, because I've had him in my life for so long."

According to the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department, most of the eight heat-related deaths that have occurred this year were a result of homes that did not have working air conditioners or very limited sources of air.
