SOMERVILLE, TN (WMC-TV) - Authorities in Fayette County say a recent undercover sting netted a record number of arrests.  In all, 45 people were arrested by Fayette County deputies on drug charges.

"I'm not sure the people are aware of the criminal activity going on here in Somerville, Oakland, Rossville, and Fayette County," said Mike Dunavant, District Attorney for the 25th Judicial District.

The eight month undercover sting helped deputies confiscate everything from crack cocaine to prescription medication to marijuana.

"We've gotten thirty plants out of one grow here in the last two weeks," said Fayette County Sheriff Bobby Riles.

In all there were 80 total indictments in Fayette County this week; 45 of those were drug related and 38 were a result of the undercover sting.

"Just because you don't see police making arrests on a daily basis doesn't mean they aren't working," Dunavant said.  "It means we're working undercover, smartly, aggressively." Dunavant continues.

Riles said he's seen a big increase in crack cocaine. He is working closely with neighboring counties to patrol Interstate 40, which is a major drug smuggling corridor.

"Take a thousand dollar bill, go to Memphis, buy your powered cocaine, come back out here and crack it, rock it up and triple your money in thirty minutes," he said.

And even though these drugs and the drug money are off the streets, deputies say undercover operations will continue.
