ARLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - A former employee at Arlington High School is facing accusations of embezzlement after thousands of dollars turned up missing.

The accusations stunned many, including some parents, who want to know who is responsible.  Trish Dyer, a parent of an Arlington High student, was shocked Tuesday by the allegations.

"It's horrible that you would want to steal from anybody, so I don't get people that would want to take it from kids," she said.

Attorney for the Tennessee Division of Municipal Audits Chad Jackson said an investigation into the allegations is ongoing.

"I can just confirm that there is an audit at Arlington High School," Jackson said.

Meanwhile, Shelby County Schools spokesperson Mike Tebbe said in a statement, "Allegations have been made regarding the mishandling of funds at Arlington High School by a former employee.  The Tennessee Division of Municipal Audits is investigating.  We can not elaborate further due to the ongoing investigation.  Regardless of the outcome of the investigation there will be no negative impacts on students, parents or programs at Arlington High."

Officials with the Tennessee Division of Municipal Audits are not releasing any specific details about the case.

"We'll take a look at the allegations, assess its risk as to whether it needs to be moved to a fast track if there's a chance the facts behind the allegations are going to cause a lot of money or property to be lost or stolen," he said.

Officials could not say how much money the school lost.
