SARDIS, MS (WMC-TV) - Police in Sardis are investigating their first murder in nearly five years, after a woman allegedly stabbed her ex-boyfriend to death during a fight.

"We responded to a report of a stabbing last Thursday night at approximately 10:00 p.m.," said Chief Marcel JoJola of the Sardis Police Department. "When the officer arrived on the scene, we were advised the victim was transported to a hospital in Batesville."

The victim, 28-year old Richard Allen, Jr., was taken to Tri-Lakes Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators said Allen and the suspect fought in front of a home on Frederick Street.

"Two hours after the termination of the victim, a young lady showed up at the Panola County Sheriff's bearing a knife saying she was responsible for the death of the victim," JoJola said

The woman, Latara Ferrell, confessed to police.  According to JoJola, Allen was the father of one of Ferrell's children, but the two were no longer together.  After questioning by authorities, Ferrell was released and the case will now head to a grand jury.

JoJola would not get into specifics as to what led up to the stabbing, but said witness reports would play a major role in the case.

"Witnesses at the location tell us there's circumstances we're not gonna release at this time because the investigation is ongoing," he said.

The grand jury will hear the case on September 20.

Allen's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
