DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC-TV) - The TeachUp program in DeSoto County schools will place one intern in each classroom to help teachers help students navigate in a digital world.

The first ever group of technology interns will begin heading to DeSoto County classrooms next week.

"They will be in that school helping the faculty and staff get the feel of technology," said instructor Lacye McCormick.  "Helping them with boards, software, find resources to help them incorporate technology into the curriculum."

The program is funded by a $2.6 million grant by AmeriCorp, which will also provide interns with a $950 stipend and a $5,350 education award.

Intern Tiffany Gray wants to expand on what she will learn and teach others.

"I'm really dedicated to trying to make this happen for the district, as well as my own child," said Gray.  "I hope I can teach him how to have the technology skills that he needs to make it in the world today."

The goal is to place a total of 200 interns in Northwest Mississippi schools this year.

Ole Miss student Tenola Plaxico said technology is becoming the way of the world.

"Everything is gravitating towards technology," Plaxico said.  "Media, arts, music, and so learning is going to follow suit."

The TeachUp program is full time and lasts through June.  For more information on the program and how to qualify, call (601) 325-3359.
