Mug shot magazine helps woman track down home invasion suspects

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman and her granddaughter used a local magazine to identify two men who attacked them at home.

Kim Carter and her four-year-old granddaughter, Asia, were at home in late July when two strangers showed up on their doorstep asking to use the phone.

The men soon pushed their way inside Carter's home, demanding money. Then, they bashed Carter in the face, pressed a gun to Asia's head, and threatened to kill them both.

"I'm not a fearful person, but I've never gone through anything like this," Carter said.

After the attack, Carter called the police, but was unhappy with the pace of the investigation, and the fact that no one was in custody. So, she began spending one dollar per week to purchase the latest edition of 'Just Busted,' a magazine that features mug shots of people recently arrested.

After five weeks, Carter was contemplating giving up her search, but decided to purchase one more issue.

"Logic denotes they'd have to show up sooner or being busted because they're criminals," she said.

Asia spotted them first, picking out both men out right away.  Featured on the same page, they had recently been arrested on un-related charges.

"I had her show them to me, and son of a gun, that was them," Carter said.

Scared, but not intimidated, Carter identified Sammy Peterson and Dan Proge to investigators.  Since the magazine was published, both men have been released on bond, but police are now working to catch them.

If you can help police locate these wanted men, police ask you call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
