LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - In just one month, students and teachers at Crockett County High School raised thousands of dollars for a three-year-old Lauderdale county girl suffering from cancer. In fact, it was love at first sight as students met Hannah Ellis for the first time.

"It makes you realize what you have and you know sometimes take stuff for granted," high school senior Miranda Kail said.

Students worked all morning Friday preparing for their guest of honor's visit.

"She's two years into treatment of a total two and a half years, there's light at the end of the tunnel, she's getting there and doing well," adds Hannah's father, Heath Ellis.

From coin drives to coke float sales, students raised thousands of dollars in just one month.

"Our original goal was $5,000 by October and we have $7,300 by the end of September," teacher Danielle Hazlewood said.

Hannah and her family are working with the Dream Factory in Dyersburg.  Money raised will be used to send Hannah on her dream trip to meet Sesame Street's Elmo.

"She is close to home and she has had such a struggle and we wanted to give her a break from her life," said teacher Misty Garrett.

Heath Ellis said Hannah's journey hasn't been easy.

"My wife is at St. Jude every week, driving back and forth to Memphis. We give her chemo every night at bedtime," he said.

Students said counting all the pennies, dimes, and dollars was worth it to see the smile on little Hannah's face when she realized her dream.

Hannah Ellis should be finished with chemo March 11 of next year.  Once she's done, she'll be able to go on her trip to meet Elmo.
