Missing baby's mother remains in jail

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The search for a missing Memphis baby continued Friday, even as the child's mother appeared in court.

Shakara Dickens, whose 10-month-old daughter Lauryn has been missing for more than two weeks, was told in court Friday by Judge Karen Massey that she will remain inside the Shelby County jail on $2 million bond.

The ruling came less than 24 hours after police charged Dickens, 19, with aggravated child neglect, endangerment and false reporting in connection to her daughter's disappearance.

Wednesday, a cadaver dog gave detectives reason to believe there were human remains inside Dicken's apartment on Yale Road.  But after obtaining a search warrant, investigators only came away with a couple of cell phones and some baby items.  

Dickens' stories about her missing daughter keep changing.  She first told authorities she gave her baby to a stranger. Then, she said her parents were keeping the child at their town home on West Hickory Bluff. Investigators spent Thursday hauling away items from that location. But there was no sign of little Lauryn.

Friday, Shakara's mother, Traci Dickens, wouldn't answer her door, but a short time later, four people emerged from her home.  But they had nothing to say about where Lauryn Dickens might be.

Memphis police were equally quiet about the case Friday.  Investigators are still waiting to learn the outcome of information gained by a few search warrants, and say they'll know where to proceed after that.
