MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A University of Memphis theater major has been nominated by MIFA for its "Start Something Good in Memphis" campaign.

An upcoming play, "Bittersweet Sixteen," is an intense drama that looks at some discouraging experiences writer Nadia Matthews remembers from high school.

"I was discouraged about my surroundings, friends getting pregnant, and guy friends joining gangs," she said.

The play tries to shock youngsters into making better choices in life.

"I did that by writing and through my stage production...and actually show you how you look wearing saggy pants, and wearing bandanas on you head," Matthews said.

The play focuses on 16-year-old Zuri Green, an orphan who gets pregnant after she is raped by three foster brothers.  Zuri "thinks" her situation is taking a turn for the better when she goes to live with her biological father.

Nadia describes him as a wealthy NFL football player who lives in a mansion with his new wife.

"Once she gets to this mansion, her fairy tale has come true, until she realizes that her stepmother has this devious plan to plot against her to steal her baby from her and hide her pregnancy," Matthews said.

The play also stars Ruby Wilson.

"Bittersweet Sixteen" debuts this weekend at the Rose Theater at the University of Memphis.
