UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) - Mingling from kiosk to kiosk at the university's FedEx Institute of Technology, Internet security expert Lute Zuendoki heard stories that sounded eerily like the experiences of some of his clients on the East Coast.

Businesses whose online networks were hacked -- after their employees surfed Facebook or other social networks on the job.

"People just use them freely, and they are unaware of the various threats that are out there," said Zuendoki, principal of the Internet security management company AIC, LLC in Cordova, TN (

The threat of what can happen with a compromised corporate network is what convinced U of M management information systems professor Dr. Judy Simon to co-direct the Center for Information Assurance (

With $4 million from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the center developed ACT ONLINE:  ten intense courses that teach successful cyber-security procedures to any organization that will listen.

"We also try to emphasize things that they might train their employees on once they have seen things to worry about," said Simon.

Private security consultants and compliance auditors lend their expertise to the courses, which the center makes available to both public and private organizations.

"If they would like for us to come and do these courses for them and develop the courses specifically for them, we can do it," said Karla Hester, project associate of the center.
