Dozens of criminals arrested in Monday round-up

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Dozens of criminals were taken off the streets Monday after another Operation: Street Sweep round-up.

At a press conference Monday afternoon, Memphis police announced that 49 people were indicted for over 143 offenses.  It was all part of an undercover operation that started back in May of 2010 and continued until August.

According to police, the youngest suspect is 17-years-old and the oldest is 60.  Six of those indicted were known members of illegal street gangs.

Mayor AC Wharton said such round-ups should be a warning for anyone out there committing crime.

"Wherever it is, we are going there," he said. "This is not a Downtown, not a Midtown effort. This is anywhere in this city. If you are doing it, it's just a matter of time before we get to you."

Also during Monday's round up seven homes were declared public nuisances and petitions were filed to close them down.
