95-year-old awarded Bronze Star for WWII bravery

NEW YORK (CNN) - More than 60 years after his heroism during a rescue mission in World War II, a 95-year-old veteran has been awarded the Bronze Star.

George Vujnovich led a mission to bring home more than 500 U.S. bomber crew members shot down in Serbia, the largest such rescue behind enemy lines in any U.S.-involved war.

"I feel very grateful for receiving it, but also very sorry for those men that deserve it more than I, who lost their life over there in Serbia and Yugoslavia, and to those airmen who didn't get out," he said.

Vujnovich only just received the Bronze Star because the U.S. kept the mission secret for decades over fears of harming relations with Yugoslavia.
