SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Mississippi man opened up Thursday about the death of his best friend, an Ole Miss fan, hours before the Rebels took on Alabama.

Jeff Dowdy recalled the memories he shared with Greg Smith on the banks of a local pond.

"Greg would come down and visit, and we would just sit out there and fish together and just enjoy the peace and quiet of being by the pond," he said.

It had always been their dream to go to the University of Alabama and experience the history of the school as they played the Ole Miss Rebels.

"What we thought was going to be a great weekend turned into the opposite of that," Dowdy said.

Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa, Smith was hit by a car traveling at a high rate of speed as he crossed a road.  Dowdy witnessed the accident.

"The vehicle never stopped," Dowdy said. "The vehicle never attempted to stop."

Smith was taken to the hospital, where he died Tuesday night.  Dowdy said his friend will be terribly missed.

Greg is one of the most loving people," he said. "Greg had no enemies. He had friends everywhere."

Smith leaves behind his pregnant wife and their 18-month-old daughter.

"Greg was a great husband," Dowdy said. "He was a great father."

But Dowdy is confident his friend is now in a better place."

"The peace about everything that's happened will eventually come," he said. "I'll miss him as a friend."

A fund has been set up to help the Smith family.  You can make a donation as any BancorpSouth branch.
