MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Investigators arrested a woman after they said she confessed to stabbing a Cordova woman more than 20 times early Thursday morning.

Lakeisha Ivy-Stevens, 31, is in the Shelby County jail on a $1 million for attempted first degree murder.

"It's scary, of course," said neighbor Kristen Shimer.

Annie Mae Puryear, 47, was hospitalized and expected to survive a brutal attack in a typically quiet subdivision.

"We love this neighborhood," said Puryear. "We love our neighbors, we love our schools."

Shimer, who moved to the neighborhood for its seemingly low crime rate, said she is on edge while investigators develop a motive.

Investigators said Ivy-Stevens confessed to the crime, but they have not said whether the two women knew one another.

"Scary things happen everywhere," said Shimer. "I'm going to be optimistic and believe that this isn't a sign of a bigger problem right here at home."

No one answered the door at Ivy-Steven's apartment about 15 miles from the scene of the attempted murder.

Neighbors said they did not know Ivy-Stevens well, but saw her going to and from work and taking her children to church.

Puryear was at the MED Friday recovering from multiple stab wounds. Her condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.
