MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Officials at the Memphis Zoo hope an ice rink will be the ticket to festive fun for visitors this winter.

Construction is underway for the first outdoor skating rink in Memphis in years, and it's already creating a lot of excitement at the zoo.

"I think it's kind of neat to have an ice skating rink here in Memphis, since the Mall of Memphis isn't here anymore," zoo visitor Amber Tackett said Wednesday.

Soon, visitors to the zoo will enjoy skating their way into the holidays on 5,400 square feet of real ice.

"It will be covered with a tent, and it'll be a place for non-skaters to watch, either parents or friends, to watch their friends skate," zoo president Chuck Brady said.

Brady said the zoo is proud to raise the bar in attraction entertainment.

"The skating rink at any time holds 150 skaters," he said.

The rink will also help enhance the profile of the city as an excellent winter destination.

"Traditionally, the winter months are the months the zoo has the least amount of visitors, and we want to change that," Brady said.

It will be a one-of-a kind experience, and something the Tackett family is looking forward to.

"It's another family event, and another way for people to come out and have fun together as a community and spend some good quality family time," Josh Tackett said.

The new ice skating rink will be open from November 19th through January 31st.
