Blue Dog founder campaigns for Childers in Miss.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A founding member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition in the U.S. House says north Mississippi needs to re-elect Travis Childers to Congress.

Retiring Rep. John Tanner of Tennessee was campaigning Friday in Mississippi's 1st District for and with Childers, a fellow Blue Dog Democrat.

Tanner told The Associated Press by phone that Childers is an independent thinker who represents north Mississippi "first, last and always," even if that means going against the Democratic House leadership.

Childers faces Republican Alan Nunnelee and seven other candidates Tuesday.

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia said in Tupelo, Miss., this week that voting for Nunnelee is a way to fire Democrat Nancy Pelosi as House speaker.
