MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Soon, residents of Downtown Memphis won't have to drive to Mud Island or Midtown to buy groceries.

Wednesday, Hamida Mandani continued to add finishing touches to her new City Market Grocery Store and Deli, located at the corner of Union Avenue and Main.

Madani believes the store is what Memphis' downtown district has always needed.

"We have lots of friends that we know downtown," she said. "They've always talked about something like this coming to downtown and we thought we could definitely cater to their needs."

The nearly 3,000 square foot facility is not officially open for business; however, Mandani is leaving the doors unlocked so customers can check it out and make suggestions.

"We want people to feel welcomed," she said. "Let them just walk in and see what we're going to carry."

Mandani qualified for a $40,000 forgivable loan from the Center City Commission., an incentive designed to spur new retail on Main Street during the recession.

"We had to show them our business plan," she said. "They had to study the business plan to make sure this kind of business is needed downtown. That was the very first qualification."

Mandani said the grocery store and deli will cater to the health conscience.

"My husband is more about eating healthy food, so I'll just keep it healthy and organic as much as possible," she said.

The business is in walking distance from just about everything downtown, including the new site for Pinnacle Airlines Corporate Headquarters at One Commerce Square.

"We've been following Pinnacle Airlines," Mandani said. "It actually happened after we gotten this.  But it has come as a blessing.  We're looking forward to it."

Mandani says City Market Grocery and Deli plans to officially open its doors by Friday of this week.
