COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - Law enforcement officers from all over Tipton County got together this past weekend to make Christmas a little brighter for kids who need help.

For nearly 40 children Christmas came early this year, all thanks to officer from as far away as Germantown who gave of their time and money.

"I just appreciate the cops so much and the girls do more than I do," said parent Pat Ward.

For Ward, this special shopping excursion couldn't have come at a better time.

"Out of pocket expenses are really big, especially with two of them," she said.

This is the seventh year for the cops and kids event.  Every year, the focus remains the same: to give Christmas to kids who might not otherwise get anything.

"Officers always deal with problems and this gives officers a chance to see the good side of things and see the good side of life," said Scottie Delashmit of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Through various fund raisers throughout the year, officers were able to raise over $3,600 this year. That means they're able to spend about $100 per child.

Ward hopes her kids learn a valuable lesson from the annual shopping experience.

"Hopefully they'll be able to pass it on and remember to pass it on," she said. "That's what we hope, they would pass it on to help others."
