MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Looking to shore up any loophole, a majority of board members on hand for a meeting Thursday night approved the minutes of Monday's night's meeting.

That was when they decided to surrender the district's charter pending a public vote.

"And you are to be elected and trusted officials," said Rev. LaSimba Gray to the board.

Gray was among several who signed up to speak.

"How could you do something like this to this city?" he asked.

It was a futile attempt to try and coerce reconsideration.

"I believe this board has placed us in a very serious position of failure," said MEA President Keith Williams.

"Would you give your children to someone who didn't want them?" asked Claudette Boyd.  "To a day care who does not want them?"

Board chairman Freda Williams did not stop the onslaught of verbal attacks.

"It's just asinine," Clara Ford told the board.

"A few of you don't even have children by birth," added Ford.  "And, to me, that's just asinine.  You don't know what it feels like to be a parent."

Although those who chose to speak did so from a united perspective, board member Patrice Robinson's reaction got some applause.

"I can only speak for Patrice Robinson," said Robinson.  "I have not given up on children of Memphis City Schools.  I have not given up on teachers.  I have not given up on anything in this school district."

She reminded the audience that the board gave voters the chance to truly decide what happens next.

We also learned during the meeting that the district will be footing the bill for a special election.  Estimates put the price tag at around $1,000,000.
