MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Midtown Memphis man was in critical condition after being shot on his walk home from work Tuesday night.

David Lyles was shot just after 11:00 p.m. Tuesday at 1999 Madison Avenue.

Friends and colleagues of Lyles who work with him at Piggly Wiggly on Madison said they are anxiously awaiting word on his condition and praying for his recovery.

Maria Therese Mitchell said the robbery and shooting that left her friend and co-worker in the hospital is upsetting.

"I'm very shaken up," said Mitchell.  "He's almost like a son."

Lyles, 26, was attacked while he was walking home from work.

"He very possibly could have been walking to my house because we see each other almost everyday after work," said Mitchell.

According to the Memphis Police incident report, Lyles called 911 from his cell phone and said he had been shot in the stomach.  Investigators said a suspect approached Lyles and demanded his wallet.  The suspect then fired one shot, striking Lyles.

The suspect, who was last seen wearing a red hooded sweater, then took off running.

Mitchell said she is trying to make sense of who could have done this to Lyles and why.

"It just could have been some poor insane soul that somebody gave a gun to," said Mitchell.  "He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

She said she will be praying for Lyles' speedy recovery.

"David, we love you," said Mitchell.  "You're very handsome and intelligent.  Very hard-working, good friend with a big heart.  Can't wait to see you, buddy."

Lyles was in critical condition at the MED Wednesday night.
