MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A gunman shot and killed a man early Thursday morning at a gas station in the 2900 block of Walnut Grove.

Trevor Berryhill had just arrived for work at Republic Coffee on Walnut Grove Thursday morning.  He was preparing to open the restaurant when a customer from the nearby gas station alerted him about a shooting.

"Right after I opened the door, a guy came in and said he usually gets his coffee at that gas station, and he went in this morning and saw the guy laid out," said Berryhill.

The shooting happened around 6:00 a.m. Thursday.  According to police, two people got into a fight and one man was shot.

"He said he heard a shot as he was walking up, but he wasn't sure what it was," said Berryhill.  "When he went inside, he saw the guy laid on the ground.  He had been shot in the head."

The 22-year-old victim died at the scene.  Witnesses said he was an employee at the store.

"Guy went into work, didn't get to go home," said Berryhill.  "That's terrible."

The suspect is reportedly in custody.  Investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

"With the police precinct right there and all the police officers around all the time, it's just strange," said Berryhill.

The owner of the store did not want to comment on the shooting.  The suspect had not been charged Thursday.
