MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis Police questioned a suspect after two people were stabbed early Sunday morning at a popular Beale Street night club.

Police said the double stabbing happened inside Club 152 around 3:00 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators said two men were stabbed during a fight inside the club.  A third man was detained and is expected to be charged in the stabbing.

The 33-year-old victim received critical injuries, while the 24-year-old victim received non-life-threatening wounds.

"It's an unfortunate thing that happened," said Ty Agee, President of the Beale Street Merchant's Association.  "I hope that man has a real quick recovery."

Agee said what happened Sunday morning could have happened anywhere.

"You cannot help when it's a situation like that, where two people bump into each other and they have a problem with each other," said Age.  "It can happen like a bolt of lightning."

Agee said the 24-year-old victim was accidentally stabbed in the hand.

"These are good people that own and run this bar over here," he said.  "They do a really good job.  I feel like we do a really good job for as many people who are on the street."

Danielle Fernandez was inside the club early Sunday morning and said it seemed like a safe place.

"It seemed fine, it seemed safe," said Fernandez.  "There were security guards everywhere and I didn't even know it had gone on.  You know, it was crowded."

Randall Holcomb, a doorman on Beale Street, said he rarely sees any problems.

"It's very atypical," said Holcomb.  "It doesn't happen a lot.  Police down here are incredible."

Stabbings on Beale Street are rare.  An Action News 5 archive search revealed the last stabbing on Beale Street happened on New Year's Eve of 2003.  That stabbing happened outside Club 152.

Beale Street is cleared at 3:00 a.m., but clubs like Club 152 stay open past that time.

People who work on Beale Street said police have stepped up their patrols of the street.

The website for Club 152, located on Beale Street at Second Street, touts itself as Memphis' live entertainment mecca.
