MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police are searching for answers in the death of an East Memphis woman who was found in her house Sunday night.

Monday, homicide investigators spent the third day of the new year on North Yates, working the city's first murder of the new year.  According to investigators, around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the 48-year-old woman was found dead inside her house on Yates.

Police have not released her name.

"The details surrounding the victim's death are unknown at this time," an MPD spokesperson said.

Neighbors said the woman lived in the home with her 11-year-old daughter. On Sunday night, the girls' father brought her home to her mother. When her mother answer the door, the father ran to a neighbor's home, where an off-duty police officer's car was parked in the driveway.  The officer entered the home, neighbors said, and found the woman's body.

Monday, yellow crime scene tape and a half-dozen cop cars generate plenty of attention in the neighborhood.

"Certainly, I hope they catch whoever did it," one neighbor said.

Police have not named a suspect.  If you can help investigators, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
