Water break leaves city without water

HIGHLAND PARK, MI (CNN) - A broken pump left area residents without clean water to start the new year.

The mayor of Highland Park declared a state of emergency Saturday for the city.

City officials say progress has been made, but adjustments to pressure are still taking place.

"We don't have any water. It's been off since Friday," said one Highland Park resident. "It came on Sunday for a minute and we just had a trickle, because we have no pressure. Then it went back off."

Many residents are buying bottled water to drink, while others have been asked to boil water since in some areas the water is brown.

The Highland Park school district canceled all classes Monday.
