MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - In the middle of other stores and businesses in Hickory Ridge Mall, a new door is opening.  It's called The Prayer Station, and according to its director, Verna Burrows, its sole goal is to share the power of prayer.

Burrows said a recent visitor came into the facility quite distressed, but left with a sense of peace.

"One prayer gave her a sense of joy and a sense of assurance that God is for her and on her side," Burrows said.

Organizers say The Prayer Station has a unique concept: when you enter, someone will pray with you on the spot. There's also plenty of room to pray on your own.

"The first day we opened up, two minutes after that, we had our first customer," Burrows said.

Inside The Prayer Station, you can pick up hundreds of written prayers, for healing, hope and everything in between.  Back in the 'spiritual war room,' volunteers from World Overcomers Church meet regular to pray for the city, pray against crime and pray about the need for people to reach out to each other.

"This is a great statement to say that we're going to the people - reaching out to the people," Burrows said. "God is not just in a box or a church setting, but God is everywhere."

The Prayer Station is part of World Overcomers pastor Alton Williams' vision of making the Hickory Ridge Mall an important part of the community. Several rooms have been renovated for chapel, religious workshops and other activities.

The Prayer Station is open seven days a week, and unlike other establishments where you shop, everything is free.
