WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - A West Memphis City Council member found himself in jail Thursday after he attacked his girlfriend.

According to West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert, Marco McClendon, the self described 'King of West Memphis,' spent several hours Thursday in the Crittenden County Detention Center after police arrested him.

McClendon is accused of beating up his former girlfriend. Paudert said officers were called McClendon's former campaign headquarters at Broadway and 10th Street around 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

"He had summoned one of his girlfriends to his office," Paudert said. "Her statement was he had struck her with his fist. They called for an ambulance. She had lacerations inside her mouth. She was bleeding profusely."

McClendon was arrested and taken to the Crittenden County Detention Center on domestic battery charges.  He denied he contacted her.

"She pulled up to my place unannounced," McClendon said.  "She begged me to come outside.  I wouldn't come outside."

Investigators said the victim told them McClendon hit her in the mouth with his fish.  They said it created a lot of bleeding.

"I did not hit this woman with my fist," said McClendon.  "This woman came and she attacked me."

McClendon said she may have been injured by his fingernail or his forearm when he tried to defend himself.

McClendon said he has a history with the woman.  Last April, she accused him of choking and beating her while she was pregnant.  He is scheduled to go to trial next week on that felony charge.
