The debate over the surrender of the Memphis City Schools charter is before us. Obviously, a critically important question for Memphians to decide.

More on that in a moment, but first I want to recognize the political courage of Martavius Jones and Tomeka Hart on this issue.

In a world where too many politicians seem to be unwilling to take a stand based on principal, it was refreshing to see these school board members lead the charge to essentially put themselves out of office.

You may disagree with the plan they promoted, but it seems clear their interest was the welfare of children who attend public schools in the City of Memphis. That is the group they were elected to protect.

I'm sure they knew going into this that even some of their best friends would oppose them on this plan. I applaud their boldness.

Now, boldness does not necessarily equal correctness. It's up to all of us, citizens and leaders, to debate this prospect fairly and thoroughly and make decisions that are in the long term best interests of the Mid-South.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
