Woman must build crypt to keep deceased family members

(NBC) - A 91-year-old Pennsylvania woman who police say kept her dead husband and sister inside her home may soon get the bodies back.

Both bodies were removed in June after investigators say Jean Stevens had dug them up from their graves.

The Bradford County D.A. said Stevens could get them back if she built a mausoleum, or above ground vault.

"I think she's just lonely, a little old lady, I feel bad for her," neighbor Tamra Porter said. "I don't think she had any ill intent."

Bradford County Coroner Tom Carman said she doesn't just want to house the two bodies she previously had.

"Her goal is to have some other family members to be placed in the crypt as well as herself," Carman said.

For neighbors, they said this makes the entire bizarre situation all that more creepy.

"Maybe she might want to be them there, but who's going to be the caretaker. I don't know what will happen after she's gone," Porter said.

When the bodies are returned to Stevens they will have to be in a sealed container. She has not been charged with a crime.

One of her friends, James Flanagan, was charged with digging up a body without a permit and abusing a corpse. His case is still pending.
